Robert Lippok - redsuperstructure

Liking this album a lot, particularly ‘sugarcubes’ - immaculately timed yet scattershot beats.

The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”, recreated from scratch.

Ukranian producer Jim Pavloff has put together “How to” videos detailing how the Prodigy made some of their biggest tracks, from the samples of Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool and the Gang and Rage Against the Machine to concocting original acid lines and keys. It’s fascinating to see how they used funk and soul samples alongside slices of rock to create something completely different and a lot harder.

Teebs ft Rebekah Raff - Verbena Tea

Teebs: “Verbena Tea with Rebekah Raff” (Prefix Premiere) by prefixmag

Teebs with Rebekah Raff on the harp. All over this and Collections 01 right now.

Byetone - Black Peace

Brutal. Love it. Buy it.

One of my favourite tracks from Patten’s album GLAQJO XAACSSO. I’ve had a quiet few weeks in terms of hunting down new music but this has grabbed me by the balls. Not even gonna try describe it.

New Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus - lullaby by Flyinglotus

Flying Lotus has been busy lately, sharing a bunch of new tracks on his Soundcloud page. I particularly like Lullaby for its techno dimensions while Heave(n) has a nice smokey, dreamy feel.

Four Tet/Daphni - Pinnacles/Ye Ye

Daphni - Ye Ye by Caribouband Pinnacles by Four Tet

It’s been well over a year since I bought a 12” single but Caribou’s latest project, under the Daphni moniker, tempted me to part with my cash for this hypnotic dancefloor nugget on a vinyl-only release. After rinsing Swim non-stop it’s the least I can do.

Four Tet’s Pinnacles stars on the flip, a smokey, jazz-flecked groove that evokes his latest album and the move into four-four territory. The filter effects feel quaint and the bassline drives the rhythm effortlessly. Both these tracks beg for smouldering summer parties to work their magic.

Get it yourself from Bleep.

Mixtape Porn

Here are some photographs of a mixtape I recently put together. I, err, went a bit overboard with the packaging… I initially made the notes for inside the usual plastic cassette case but realised I buggered it up by making it too big, which meant the tape itself wouldn’t fit inside. Rather than cut it up and undo my work, I decided to make a cardboard case from scratch.

The whole thing was made from an empty cereal box, a cut up Workers’ Liberty newspaper and choice words cut out of other newspapers and an issue of New Statesman.

You can listen to the tracks on Spotify: Side A / Side B

Dam-Funk ‘Truth’ Mixtape

oki-ni presents TRUTH by DaM-FunK by oki-ni

Dam Funk, purveyor and producer of all things sex, has put out a new mixtape for the Oki-Ni store. Yeah, they’re a svelter than svelte fashion house, but there are some cracking looking mixes on their website, including sets from Marcel Dettmann, Andrew Weatherall and Martyn.

From the horse’s mouth: “All songs were taken from the original wax pressings. This mix is what I simply listen 2 on any given day, while living life. It’s a pleasure to share these tracks with my new oki-ni friends. I own all of these records. No mp3s or computer files were used for this mix. No fake shit or fads; just the truth.”

Nihon Kizuna - Compilation for Japan

V.A. - Nihon Kizuna (日本絆) by laurentfintoni

Dozens of artists from around the world have contributed tracks to this immense benefit compilation to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The effort was sparked by a group of artists in Tokyo and a visiting European journalist and put together in just five days. Nihon Kizuna roughly translates as ‘bond of friendship with Japan’.

Featured artists include: Kode 9, Throwing Snow, Om Unit, Daisuke Tanabe, Kid Kanevil and Illum Sphere.

The whole thing only costs a tenner (or you can pay more if you wish) and features some brilliant music. Get behind it!
